'History tells us what people do; historical fiction helps us imagine how they felt.' - Guy Vanderhaeghe.

"In time I understood one thing - that you don't become a novelist to become a spinner of entertaining lies. You become a novelist so you can tell the truth." - Hilary Mantel

"I am not an historian. I do, though, believe that as historical novelists we owe our readers honesty in the facts as far as they can be proven – recorded events and dates, how people dressed, food eaten and so on, all gleaned from research."  - Apple Gidley

Lady Penelope Rich is one of the most beautiful and sought-after women in Elizabethan England. The daughter of the Earl of Essex, she is married to the wealthy Baron Robert Rich. Penelope's life is full of love and scandal. The inspiration for Sir Philip Sidney’s sonnet Astrophel and Stella, she is caught up in the Essex Rebellion.

A complex and fascinating woman, her life is a story of love, betrayal, and tragedy.

“This is a woman who lived life on her own terms, and her story will stay with you long after you finish reading it.”
